Queue Priority

In price-time priority markets, orders at the same price fill in the order they arrived. Earlier orders have higher fill probability.

Why it matters

Queue position changes execution outcomes. Late orders may not fill at all; early orders may be first to get hit by informed flow.

Trading use: the point is not vocabulary. The point is prediction: what changes when this shows up?

Common trap

Assuming a limit order guarantees a fill or guarantees price improvement.

Example

You join the bid after a long queue formed. Price touches your level and bounces, but you never get filled.

Operational cue: if you can’t point to it on the chart, in the DOM, or in your broker logs, treat it as a story and trade smaller.

Notes

Quick rule

  • If you see this repeatedly, you are in a different regime than your model assumes.
  • Regime change usually means position size change.
  • When in doubt: trade smaller, or don’t trade.
