Mechanism
In a central limit order book, resting orders fill by price-time priority. When volatility rises, the book reshuffles fast. If you’re late to the queue, your limit is effectively a wish. If you’re early, you may be the first to get hit by informed flow.
Practical framing: the market is a feedback system. Your job is to remove the behaviors that produce the same loss pattern, not to “feel better” about it.

You assume “limit order = price control.” In reality you get a tradeoff: better price when the market comes to you, worse selection when the market is running you over. Without measuring it, you can’t tell whether limits are saving you or picking you off.

Rule that survives
If you use limits, measure fill rate and markout. If fill rate is low, you’re not executing — you’re waiting. If fill rate is high and markout is bad, you’re being selected. Adjust aggressiveness until both are acceptable.

- Write the trigger in observable terms.
- Write the action in one sentence.
- Write the penalty for breaking it.
Example archetype
The trader who “never uses market orders” and wonders why their best moves happen without them. Or the trader who is always filled on the first touch and wonders why it immediately goes against them.
Tell: if your rule isn’t enforceable, it’s a suggestion. Suggestions don’t survive stress.

This matters most in: fast markets, small timeframes, and crowded levels. It is less visible in OTC-style feeds, but the same reality still shows up as “why did I not get filled?” versus “why was I filled so easily?”.
