FXRISK Manual

Stop Management Is Thesis Management

When you move a stop, you are redefining invalidation; if nothing changed in the thesis, moving the stop is just permission to be wrong longer.

Mechanism

A stop is not a number. It is the operational expression of invalidation: the point where the trade thesis is proven wrong.

Many traders move stops for emotional reasons: to avoid being wrong, to reduce pain, or to “give it room” without resizing. That is thesis drift in real time.

The market doesn’t care why you moved the stop. It only cares that you increased exposure to the same uncertainty.

Process upgrade: turn this truth into a rule you can actually enforce. If the rule can’t be enforced, it will be broken under stress.

  • Write the trigger condition in observable terms.
  • Write the action in one sentence.
  • Write the penalty for breaking it.
How it kills accounts

Trade goes against you → discomfort → widen stop without resizing → risk increases → more discomfort → further overrides → large loss or margin stress.

How it kills accounts:

  1. The rule exists only in your head.
  2. Stress arrives and you improvise.
  3. Improvisation becomes inconsistency.
  4. Inconsistency becomes random results.
  5. Random results become a slow bleed.
Rule that survives

Only move a stop if the thesis changes and you can explain the new invalidation.
Never widen a stop without reducing size (risk stays capped).
Pre-write stop adjustment rules; improvisation is hidden leverage.

Rule that survives:

  • Write the trigger in observable terms.
  • Write the action in one sentence.
  • Write the penalty for breaking it.
Example archetype

Price wobbles near your stop. You widen it ‘just a bit’. Then you widen again. The loss becomes large not because the market was evil, but because you changed the contract mid-trade.

Tell: if your rule isn’t enforceable, it’s a suggestion. Suggestions don’t survive stress.

Deep dive

Invalidation is the anchor

Stops are not comfort tools. They are hypothesis tests.

Field checklist

  • Write the rule in observable terms: if X, then Y.
  • Remove choices under stress. Choices become rationalizations.
  • Track the precursor: what state were you in before the mistake?
  • Make deviations costly (size down, pause, review).
  • Turn lessons into gates, not notes.
