Mechanism
Stops are tests. If the market repeatedly hits your stop and then moves, the issue is rarely “bad luck”. It’s usually stop placement, volatility regime, or thesis mismatch.
A stop-out can tell you:
- your invalidation level was wrong (thesis wrong), or
- your stop was in noise (thesis right, placement wrong), or
- the regime made precision impossible (execution wrong for conditions).
Treating stop-outs as insults produces revenge behavior, which converts a single loss into a sequence.
Process upgrade: turn this truth into a rule you can actually enforce. If the rule can’t be enforced, it will be broken under stress.

Stop-out → emotional interpretation → immediate chase/re-entry → friction stacks → loss cluster → daily damage.

After a stop-out, classify it: wrong thesis, wrong placement, or wrong regime.
If it’s regime/volatility, reduce size and widen the plan or stop trading.
Don’t re-enter until your “what changed?” condition is satisfied.

Example archetype
You get stopped twice at a level that keeps holding. Instead of doubling down, you realise your stop is inside noise. You either adjust the plan (wider + smaller) or stop trading the chop.
Tell: if your rule isn’t enforceable, it’s a suggestion. Suggestions don’t survive stress.
