Mechanism
A “synthetic” stop (mental stop, manual close, “I’ll exit if…”) depends on your attention, your platform, and your willingness to be wrong in real time. The market does not wait for your cursor. Gaps, spikes, and platform latency turn synthetic stops into much larger losses than planned.
Process upgrade: turn this truth into a rule you can actually enforce. If the rule can’t be enforced, it will be broken under stress.
- Write the trigger condition in observable terms.
- Write the action in one sentence.
- Write the penalty for breaking it.
How it kills accounts
You think you’re being “flexible”. In reality you’re converting bounded risk into unbounded risk. The first time you hesitate, disconnect, or freeze, a normal loss becomes a capital event.
How it kills accounts:
- The rule exists only in your head.
- Stress arrives and you improvise.
- Improvisation becomes inconsistency.
- Inconsistency becomes random results.
- Random results become a slow bleed.
Rule that survives
Use a real stop when the trade *must* be bounded. If you insist on a synthetic stop, size as if you have no stop at all and pre-plan the exact exit trigger. No improvisation.
Rule that survives:
- Write the trigger in observable terms.
- Write the action in one sentence.
- Write the penalty for breaking it.
Example archetype
The trader who avoids hard stops because they hate being wicked out. One day they’re in the wrong trade during a fast move and learn what “unlimited” means.
Tell: if your rule isn’t enforceable, it’s a suggestion. Suggestions don’t survive stress.
Deep dive
A clean compromise is a wide hard stop (disaster stop) plus a tighter planned exit rule. The hard stop protects the account; the rule protects the thesis.
Glossary: synthetic stop, margin closeout.
Field checklist
- Write the rule in observable terms: if X, then Y.
- Remove choices under stress. Choices become rationalizations.
- Track the precursor: what state were you in before the mistake?
- Make deviations costly (size down, pause, review).
- Turn lessons into gates, not notes.
